R. Matthew Poteat is an assistant professor of History at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he teaches courses in American, African-American, and Western civilization. He is the author of the biography Gov. Henry Toole Clark Civil War Governor of North Carolina (Jefferson,, N. C.: McFarland and Co., 2009) and has written for a variety of scholarly journals and online publications.

Henry Toole Clark was governor of North Carolina during the Civil War from 1861-1862. He was a Democratic leader in the state senate in the critical decade of the 1850s and for a brief time during Reconstruction.
