Michael Lowrey was a policy analyst for the John Locke Foundation and associate editor for Carolina Journal. He is a recognized expert on German submarine operations during World War I and handles much of the World War I materials for the uboat.net website. He works extensively with divers and others to locate and identify submarine wrecks in the North Sea and the English Channel, having played a lead role in nine submarine identifications to date.
Lowrey is a coauthur of HMS Hampshire: a Century of Myths and Mysteries Unravelled, which was a finalist for the 2017 Mountbatten Maritime Award.
Lowrey grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in economics and political science. Lowrey holds a master’s degree in economics from N. C. State University. He currently teaches economics classes at Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.
World War I U-Boats
In the summer of 1918, five large German submarines (U-boats) crossed the Atlantic and operated against the lightly protected shipping off the North American coast. Several of the U-boats would get as far south as the North Carolina coast, where they sank three ships just a few miles from the Outer Banks.
