R. Matthew Poteat is an Assistant Professor of History at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he teaches courses in American, African-American, and western history.  He is the author of a forthcoming book on Gov. Henry Toole Clark and has written several articles and reviews for a variety of scholarly journals and online publications.

Henry Toole Clark was governor of North Carolina during the Civil War from 1861-1862.  He was a Democratic leader in the state senate in the critical decade of the 1850s and for a brief time during Reconstruction.
