Oberlin Cemetery

Located on Oberlin Road and nestled in between office buildings and condominiums, the 142-year-old cemetery is the burial ground for generations of Oberlin Village’s earliest residents.   Some had been slaves.  A. J. Haywood, a member of North Carolina’s all-black regiment during the Spanish- American War, is also buried there, but his marker no longer stands.  The older part of the five-acre cemetery dates to circa 1836.  The last burial was as recent as 2007.   Many community groups and volunteers maintain the old cemetery.
